What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

Propecia (finasteride) Contains FinasterideFinasterideis a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. Finasteride converts the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to the active ingredient 5-alpha reductase in the body. 5-alpha reductase is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT. As a result DHT levels are reduced which eventually leads to androgenetic alopecia. DHT (5-alpha reductase) causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of hair (see picture). This cycle is repeated. This cycle is considered to be repeated. Finasteride reduces hair loss but does not permanent hair loss Finasteride causes hair to become permanently thinner. This effect is only seen with Propecia. It is very unlikely that Finasteride will permanently shrink hair loss hair on the scalp. However, it is more likely that hair loss will continue during Propecia treatment.
